Where does the time go? I know part of it is all the traveling lately. Between February 8 and February 29, I was in the office for 2 days. I have been on the "Grand Tour of the South" visiting classes in SC, GA, and AL. I went to NY. Then I was in DC. As far as I know, I am going to be at home for THREE WHOLE WEEKS. That should make crazy deadlines coming up a little easier, at least.

Given that I haven't posted in a million years, I should say that I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I had resisted the whole eReader thing, reasoning that I get a lot of books from the library and I didn't want to start buying them. But, when you get one as a gift... And, how quickly we adapt, though. I have several paper books that are on my shelf just waiting to be read, but I finished a book last night and am trying to figure out what to read on the Kindle next. I have done a good job of getting things from the Kindle Owners Lending Library. My library also has some Kindle books, so I have gotten some books from there. I have bought a couple as well. It means I have been reading some good stuff lately, because it is easier to carry around and to read on my phone when I don't have it. I just need to remember to carry magazines or One Story editions or something for the first and last few minutes of flights. I can only read Hemispheres magazine so many times (three days in the Virgin Islands, anyone? I have read the article a couple of times now).

I am on a conference call at the moment. It is really hard to hear -- no, to understand -- so I have been a bit distracted. I suppose I should go try to listen a little more, though.

We are going to the football game on Saturday. There is a high wind watch from 2 AM to 6 PM. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible. That should be fun.

I have written a whole chapter today. Granted, it is for middle schoolers, so it isn't that long, but I don't usually do that in a day. I am feeling rather accomplished even if the whole thing was under duress. I still have a ton to do over the next week, but so far it is all right on schedule. We will see if I can keep up the pace.

I love hearing from former students. I got an email from one today, asking for a syllabus. She has made some career-changing decisions and is going back to school.

I had 3 trips in 1.5 weeks and then my mom came. We had what was probably the best visit we have had since I moved out here. Not that any of them have been bad, but this one was especially fun. We did all sorts of stuff and stayed quite busy and she met the bf finally.

Yes, I know I don't update enough and so most things I seem to want to say are random and out of the blue, but I figure if I jump right in and just say stuff rather than trying to catch up, maybe I will update more often.

I have finally gotten the new computer up to speed with all my music and pictures and the stuff from the classes I taught years ago. I also have the hard drives from the last two laptops along with a thing that can make the hard drives into an external hard drive type thing, so I didn't transfer stuff I wasn't sure I would need. At least the new one has the most important stuff of music and pictures on it now.

I have not been in the office for 2 weeks and 1 day because of all the trips. I am not looking forward to going back tomorrow. It is supposedly going to snow 6 inches on Wednesday, so if that happens I think I will work at home. I keep telling myself that one day back in the office and then a day to work at home isn't bad. Here's hoping that it really does snow and I am not disappointed!

I did figure out how to drain the sprinkler system myself. That is good. I messed up stuff related to it last year because I didn't ever have it blown out. It seems that a coworker just drains hers, not has it completely blown out, so hopefully this will be okay.

I have been reading this looooong book forever. It is a big, fat hardback, so every time I go somewhere, I pick up a different book so I don't have to carry it around. I am less than 100 pages from the end, though, now. I feel like I need to go read so maybe I can finally get it done. I have a bunch of other books I want to read, but feel like I just need to finish this one so I can be done with it.

I am really crabby tonight. I wasn't, but then I was, and now I am. It isn't even worth saying anything about, except that there was something I really wanted to do and now something else has gotten in the way. Bah.

I had a dream the other night that I was in prison. It was apparently a pretty low security kind of place because it looked kind of like a high school inside, but you weren't allowed to leave. I had just gotten there, but I already had some sort of job picking up trash and recycling around the prison. Then I was in a room with 5 other girls. There were cots for everyone but me. They were looking for one for me, but in the meantime, I had to sleep on this weird chair. I wonder what it means and if it is a statement on how I am feeling about certain things these days.

Seems like there are some good new shows out there this fall. Also, I finally saw The Help this weekend. I had read the book. It was great and so was the movie. The movie made me want to read the book again because there were some things that didn't seem the same.

Ahhh, here I am posting from a new computer. It can be unplugged and not immediately lose all power. It's power cord plugs into something that doesn't sometimes disappear down into the computer. All the keys are actually attached. It is much faster and better. And, it isn't the work computer, so I actually feel like I can come to LJ and not worry so much about being "found out." Hopefully this means I will be around more often. I wonder if anyone ever actually reads this any more...

Things are good, for the most part. I am a little worried about the place I work having enough money to fund all of us next year, but other than that, things are good. I have my review in a few weeks, so hopefully things will be clearer then. I was scoping out jobs last night and found a really good one -- that also happens to be back in the Atlanta area -- but I am not ready to apply to anything yet. Luckily the closing date is after my review, so if I find out that things are not looking so good, there is still time. (Not good for the company, that is. I am not really worried about my own performance.) That also gives me time to ponder whether I would actually want to move back to Atlanta or not.

In other news, I have finally painted the living room and dining room. I have colors for other rooms. I love the living room and dining room. I also know that I am going to love the kitchen color when I get around to painting it. The guest bedroom should also be nice. I am only unsure about the bathroom color, and that is because the interior designer (that I got from a deal on Living Social) thinks I should paint it white. White? What she said makes sense in that the tile is white, the cabinets are white, the toilet it white, so it breaks up whatever color is there. She said I should paint white and then use towels and the shower curtain for some fun color. But white? Tell me your white bathroom stories, please.

I am so glad that TV is back. I am liking that new show Two Broke Girls. There are other shows that I am glad to see again. Pan Am also seemed interesting, but we will see how that goes.

Ah, well, I am feeling the need to catch you up on all sorts of stuff, but let's not jump right in with everything, shall we?

Also:

1. Why does cnn.com suddenly have a big fat ad all around the news and stuff?

2. How did Jonathan Taylor Thomas get to be 30?

3. Why has my TV been on mute for the last hour and a half? It could have at least been entertaining me while I finished up that whole painting thing.

Look, I am posting two nights in a row! Go me!

I have successfully done all the edging and cutting in for the painting of the dining room. Last weekend was the living room and since the two are attached, this weekend is supposed to be the dining room. But, I would like to do something else this weekend, so I spent 3 hours doing all the edging tonight so that all that needs to be done this weekend is the rolling. Well, and the baseboards and stuff, but I don't necessarily think that has to be done this weekend.

Once all the painting is done, I will have to make some real decisions about which furniture to keep in here and what to take out. That is quite the dilemma as what LOOKS best means that only 1 person in the room has a table on which to put a drink, but what is more practical (so that everyone has a place to put a drink) looks too cluttered. Which side will win out?

Hi. I broke out my personal computer and figured while I had it out I would say hi.

I got an iPod for my birthday (I know, welcome to the 21st century! But I have had an iPhone, complete with iPod-like capabilities, for years so it isn't as bad as it sounds.), so I have cleaned up my iTunes and have been checking out lots of old music on there. Fun, except that I have hit some songs that make me sad. A lot of these songs are from a different era in my life and they have memories attached to them. It is midnight, so I really should be going to bed anyway.

I have finally painted my living room. This weekend will be the dining room. I had a living social thing for an interior designer so she came by and picked out colors for the whole house except my bedroom. It also involves getting rid of some furniture and I am having a bit of a dilemma about whether I really want to do that. But, the colors look really good. I just hate to get rid of furniture because I would be surprised if I am still in this house in 3-5 more years so it seems silly to make everything perfect here. That's probably the wrong attitude.

I have apparently been watching Food Network way too much lately because I have seen all the shows that have been on this evening. Now, there were a couple of new shows on, which I watched, but now it is late and they are replaying them, so I have seen the new shows twice now, too. Well, for as much attention as I am paying to them. Definitely time for bed.

Which is worse? A) to actually lose your wallet or B) to think you left your wallet at work, drive to work at 8:00 pm, find that your wallet isn't there, drive halfway home, turn around to go check the work parking lot just in case, start back home while making plans on how you are going to replace as many things as possible before you leave town tomorrow, only to find that your wallet was in the bottom of your computer bag at your house all along?

In other news, I am learning all sorts of new things about myself this summer. Namely, I actually have wavy/curly hair, not straight but "bad" hair like I thought. Also, I suspect that I have been getting migraines for years and didn't realize what they were. Interesting.

You know you are traveling too much when your big boss sees you and says, Hey! You're here! When do you leave?

Tomorrow.

Oh, I thought we wouldn't see you all week.

On one hand, I always say that life would be so much easier if I didn't have to sleep. All that TIME! To do other STUFF!

On the other hand, I am too old for this. I am not in college anymore.

And yet, here I go, about to pull an all nighter. That just seems wrong coming out of a 37 year old's mouth. It is 2:00 am. I have about an hour left of work to do. I also have to pack to be gone for 6 days, 2 different work projects plus a fun weekend in the middle. Then, my flight leaves at 7:45 am. Need to be at the airport by 6:45, leave home by 6:15 at the latest, get up by 5:15. I am thinking that just staying up until I am on the plane is going to be easier than getting an hour and 15 minutes of sleep.

So, the moral of this story is that YES! I can accomplish a lot when I don't have to sleep. But, I am really too old to not sleep.

I have GOT to get a new computer soon. I am ready. I also will be making some extra money from some things I am doing in the next few weeks, so I will be getting one in the very near future. That will let me update more often because my computer will no longer suck (and I don't want to use my work laptop to update this for various reasons).

Today, they took our computers at work so that they could do stuff. We had an all day meeting so it wasn't TOO traumatic. Now I am at home, though, and have to do things like pay bills and see if I can make some plane reservations, so here I am on my sucky personal computer. Soon, soon, I will fix that.

I just realized that my annual "happy birthday" post on April 16 never posted. Hm. That's what I get for trying to post from my phone.

But, I am not dead. I am traveling a fair amount and have other things going on, but I am still here.

Part of the reason I hardly ever post any more is that I don't want to go to LJ on my work laptop, but my home laptop is sucking so bad these days that I hate to turn it on. It has Issues, with a capital I. Not the least of which are power problems, so if I move the computer the wrong way, it cuts off.

This also results in never syncing my phone. Tonight I am having an issue with the email on my phone which I suspect will be solved by new software, so I am having to work on my home laptop. Nobody move so that the power cord doesn't move!

Now it is telling me the backup failed. Can't get new software until it is backed up but the back up failed. Sigh. I think I am going to have to suck it up soon and get a new home laptop.

It would be nice if I knew for sure that I was going to have a job after July, though, before I buy a new laptop. I THINK I should still have a job after July but since we are all grant-based, I don't really know. We have a bunch of proposals submitted, but things are tight everywhere and one of the places we submitted stuff got 700-900 proposals and they expect to fund 20. Hm.

Well, let's not think about that. In the meantime, I need to go put sheets on the bed so that I can go to sleep sometime soon.

Ah, early Sunday morning at the airport for a 7:00 flight. Just when I thought I had no more work trips scheduled, I get 4 more in the next 8 weeks. Luckily they are all just 1 day trips. This past week marked only the second full week I have been at home since the beginning of the year. It should be considerably slower after this though.

One of these days, I will have time to type about real things. That isn't going to be this week, though. A few bullets that I might write about sometime...

  • I had jury duty last Monday. I was actually selected for the jury. I never, ever, in a million years thought that would happen.
  • I was in San Francisco for the "tsunami." It wasn't really a tsunami there and I saw no ill effects.
  • I thought I had no work travel scheduled for... well, for any time in the near future. Keep in mind that I have only had one full week at home since the year started. I was quite excited. I found out today that I have to be in Chicago on Monday. There will be 3 additional trips before May 11. So much for staying home.
  • I also have to have a full day workshop planned for Monday. Oh, and write 5-7 pages of a proposal by this Wednesday, plus it would be good to get a chapter or two done this week. Did I mention I am trying hard not to work on weekends these days?
  • I had a rough day, but you know what? It stayed light until SEVEN PEE-EMMMM! Woo hoo!

I can't remember - have I shown you my walls? Post-insulation installation (say that 10 times fast) my walls looked like this...

...in NINETY-FIVE places. I have since gotten all 95 holes patched, so now there are patches all around the house.

Now, in one way this is a good thing. When I moved into the house, the colors were okay. Better than okay, they were fine. I liked them well enough but they weren't really MY colors.

Literally, a month after I moved in, a friend flew to see me and we went to pick out paint colors. I still have all those swatches on my coffee table. As a reminder, I moved in here in September of 2007. And I have never painted.

Now, though, I have all these patches on the walls. I have a reason to paint! Except that the holes and patches were made in December and it is going to be March next week. I did go get MORE paint swatches. But even hosting book club at my house in February was not enough incentive to paint. (Granted, I had 6 trips in 5 weeks, but still...)

A huge chunk of my problem is that I am overwhelmed by the commitment of choosing paint colors. These colors are going to be ON MY WALLS. Where anyone can see them. And know that I picked them out and chose to put them on my walls.

The point of all this is to say that today's Living Social deal was a 1-hour consultation with an interior designer. I bought that puppy. She specializes in color selection. I plan to call her ASAP to get my consultation set up so this woman can pick colors for me. Then if the colors suck, I am handing out her name and number.

So excited. Spending April Fools' night at the Stanley Hotel. (Anyone seen a little movie called The Shining? Yeah, that's the hotel.) Should be very fun.
